Co-op games have the ability to reward you in ways that no other genre can. The magic of games may manifest itself in a variety of ways, but it is perhaps when you collaborate with a buddy to accomplish a goal that they shine the brightest. So, what are the games that will really bring friends together while also providing the most thrilling group-based experiences?

The finest cooperative games are those that allow you to explore new worlds with a friend by your side, defeat evil as a group, teach a newcomer to the wonders of the medium, or just hit each other over the head with dubious equipment for fun. Games for one or two players may be a life-sucking hilarity, but when you share your virtual successes with others, they become sweeter.

Co-op games are some of the most enjoyable gaming experiences available, whether you’re sitting next to your friend with a controller in hand or working together in perfect harmony through voice chat to achieve success. So welcome the company of others and bid farewell to play alone. These are some of the top co-op games available for you to play with your friends and family members.

It Takes Two

It takes two game logo written in orange on a red background

It Takes Two is the first choice on our list. This magnificent co-op platformer takes the notion of Honey I Shrunk the Kids and instead cuts it down to the size of two fighting parents, who are reduced to the size of little dolls in the process.

Cody and May, who are on the brink of divorce and squabbling in front of their daughter, must work together to come back to their bodies when they are inexplicably transformed into small, walking toys. Each place has something unique to offer, from the tool shed’s every nook and cranny to the boughs and alcoves of the garden trees, and everything in between.

Along the journey, you’ll come across a variety of amusing characters, including an army of squirrels, talking tools, and terrifying bosses that represent prior disagreements between the pair.

It is the annoying guide who appears on your journey, delivering equipment for each player such as a hammer and nails or a grapple, compelling you to work together in order to reach new locations as you swoop, swing, and climb to solve puzzles in this lovely and twee story of love and hope.

Discover new places in a huge expansion and enjoy the progression systems the developers prepared for you in the quest mode.

A Way Out

Two video game character standing in a prison

One of the best RPGs on our list. There aren’t many games these days that are solely playable in co-op, but A Way Out is one of those rare exceptions.

The co-op never feels like an afterthought; whether you’re splashing water to direct fish to each other, going back to back to shimmy up a wall gap, passing a chisel between cells to find an exit route, or even just playing Connect Four or a game of basketball, the co-op is always designed for you to enjoy together in a way that’s satisfying and worthwhile regardless of the scale of the interaction.

You’re two convicts attempting to discover a way out of jail and a step closer to atonement, but more importantly, this is a tale that you must share with one another in order to be fully immersed in the experience. In addition, it’s the finest co-op game we’ve ever encountered.

Left 4 Dead 2

Four video game characters surviving in a game

At the moment, we’re all waiting with bated breath for any news on Left 4 Dead 3, which Valve has previously alluded about. For now, we have Left 4 Dead 2 to keep our voracious zombie cravings satisfied until that day arrives.

When it comes to Left 4 Dead 2, which is considered one of Valve’s great masterpieces, the emphasis is on close collaboration against the background of an extraordinarily nasty zombie epidemic. As a result of a large number of zombies on the battlefield, it is critical to remain together and analyze threats at each turn of the campaign’s vast landscapes.

Ensure that there is always someone available to rescue you from a surprise special infected assault or to assist you in thinning the horde so that you can make your escape. It’s best enjoyed with a group of pals who are all wearing headsets since the game’s rapid speed necessitates the ability to re-plan and inform your teammates within seconds of events occurring.

However, playing with strangers is not difficult, particularly if they are ready to teach you a few techniques along the way. Find the best strategies to take control of the situation, play with some legendary weapons like the shotgun.

Killing Floor 2

Animated scary video game characters standing in a fire

Killing Floor 2 takes place one month after the zombie events of the first game, with continental Europe being overrun by Horzine Biotech’s botched experimentation. In addition, knowing that we’re dealing with one of the finest zombie games available, we’re aware that the infected don’t do well in this misguided experiment.

When you throw in a few friends into the mix, things become much worse for them. We were struck down with a compulsive need to keep playing this zed-flavored first-person shooter with our buddies shortly after its release. Killing Floor 2 takes one of the greatest co-op games available and amps it up to 11, but Tripwire Interactive surely doesn’t hold back on the gore.

Prepare to witness blood, limbs, and intestines splattered on the walls of the corridors as you blast your way through the undead-filled maze. For the first time ever, there are more zombies than ever before, and you can participate in select PvP matches where you can take on the role of the zed if that’s your thing.

Even better, Killing Floor 2’s most interesting feature was only added at the last minute due to a technical glitch. The more you know, the better. Survive the dark zone and waves of enemies in constant chaos, be the last man standing, and try new guns in the online multiplayer, which is also available. Additionally conquer some bosses in the boss fights, which appear as you progress.

Portal 2

One of the best games on our list. If Portal 2 were available on current-generation consoles, it would almost certainly be at the top of this list.

For the time being, you can only play Portal 2 on a computer, but don’t let that put you off. It is one of the most enjoyable co-op experiences you will ever have if you have a desktop or laptop computer that can run it (which most can), as well as a buddy who can do the same thing for you.

The co-op campaign represents a significant increase in difficulty over the already challenging first campaign. Non-stop collaboration between you and a buddy, who are both in charge of a lovable robot, will be required in order to complete a test chamber.

You will often be required to time your movements and actions to perfection. If one player leaps or triggers a button even a fraction of a second too early or too late, the whole scheme comes crashing down.

Communication becomes much more important, and each challenge becomes even more satisfying to complete as a result. A great choice is to follow the game rules and a significant challenge is to make the best choices.

Monster Hunter World

What better way to take on enormous beasts than with the support of your best friends? Considering that the open-world beastie brawler series has just recently found its way to the PC, it’s conceivable that you, or your BFFs, have never played a Monster Hunter game before.

A large new planet-renowned as a favorite migratory site for many fabled monsters and animals await you in Monster Hunter: World, allowing you to explore a previously unexplored section of the Monster Hunter Universe previously unexplored by the player.

As part of your study for the Fifth Fleet, you’ll have to go to these exotic locations in search of and slay monsters as part of your mission. There are a number of battle tactics and diverse weapons to pick from, allowing you and your squad to specialize in different weapon kinds and spread out around the map.

Example: One of you can be an expert with the Hunting Horn and use it to boost your colleagues, while another can go to work with an ultra-precise Bow and cover the squad from a vast distance with the Hunting Horn. Another feature that distinguishes Monster Hunter: World as one of the greatest co-op games on the PC is the fact that it automatically detects your Steam groups and builds in-game squads for you to participate in.

The ability to see who is online from your squad may be a little tricky at times, but the general integration of Steam groups makes organizing hunting excursions with your buddies much simpler. Monster Hunter: World relies on the excitement of the hunt and the drama of boss battles, so instead of going at it alone, join up with your friends to take out these giants and achieve peak squad objectives.

A slew of new material is included in the Monster Hunter World: Iceborne expansion, featuring over thirty new monsters to fight alongside your team in the process. Not exactly Fortnite or Minecraft, in terms of popularity but certainly a great choice for you and a second player friend.

Vermintide 2

Medieval fight scene in a game

Vermintide 2 is a follow-up to the original splat the rat-simulator that tackles almost all of the issues that players encountered with the first game. Is there not enough variety among the enemies?

There are numerous new boss types, as well as a large number of Chaos grunts, to be dealt with by hacking, slashing, shooting, and burning your way through.

Wanted to see more growth depending on your class? Every Hero now has three specializations that you may level up through, virtually doubling the number of classes available in the sequel to the original. Is Vermintide 1 too gloomy and gloomy for you?

In Vermintide 2, there are a plethora of maps that are diverse and very lovely. All of this builds on the already-impressive foundation of Left 4 Dead 2, which is widely regarded as one of the finest co-op games of all time.

What Vermintide 2 excels at is letting you feel every decapitation, bludgeoning, and incineration, rather than just substituting zombies for mutant rats and diseased Chaos soldiers. Every weapon in the game feels as fantastic as the Unreal Tournament Flak Cannon, so you won’t even realize that combat is a simple matter of clicking until all of the vermin have been converted to blood.

There are few better ways to while away the hours than with three of your closest friends at your side.

Destiny 2

Destiny 2 game character in purple armor

Fans predicted that it will reach the popularity of Grand Theft Auto 5. This game guarantees much fun for mate play. Find your best group and avoid mean players in the online chat rooms of the game. The PC release of Destiny 2 may have been your first exposure to Bungie’s massive console game, and you may have been a little perplexed at first.

As you can see in our Destiny 2 PC review, the game’s paper-thin storyline fails to spin a compelling tale, there aren’t a large number of activities to engage in, and you’ll have completed almost all of the game’s objectives in approximately 30 hours.

But if you think of the game as a social environment for you and your friends — the online games equivalent of a pub where you can fire aliens – it all comes together to make one of the greatest co-op games available for the PC.

We’ve designed all of Destiny 2’s activities to function best when played with others, whether you’re racing over a planet’s surface on a Sparrow hoverbike, exploring a cave in quest of powerful treasure, or utilizing our Destiny 2 Shadowkeep raid guide to complete the challenging endgame objective.

Achieving victory against a formidable Nightfall monster by combining class skills, mastering Destiny 2’s greatest PvP weapons, and using your team’s unique abilities delivers a true feeling of accomplishment that few other games can equal.

With server resets taking place every Tuesday, bringing with them new loot and challenges, Destiny 2 makes sense as your weekly virtual get-together with the crew in virtual reality. Establish a sustainable base and experience the weapon feels which are truly unique.

Remnant From The Ashes

Cineamtic scene from a video game

There aren’t many co-op games available that provide the kind of experience that Remnant From the Ashes delivers. A fully-fledged co-op game in the vein of Souls, with lots of its own twists on the genre, not the least of which is a strong focus on ranged combat and shooting capabilities.

Take your selection from among three different starting classes and set out on a quest to defeat an evil adversary known as the Root — no prizes for guessing that they’re really just angry trees – in a post-apocalyptic world. Bosses and places are introduced in a random sequence, guaranteeing that every game is different. You and up to two other people may experience this for yourselves.

Aside from the fact that there’s some fairly decent stuff to be discovered, it also means there’s always a shiny new piece of armor to aspire for. Scavenging and building together your own weapons are also available if you want to play crafting games rather than action games.

Give this game a try, and enjoy this free-to-play shooter, one time, and certainly, you will get hooked, and return.

Trine 2

Beautiful cinematic scene from a video game with gradient colors all over the place

Trine 2 is unquestionably the best edition in this endearing platformer/puzzle series, and it is also a pleasant co-op experience.

A warrior, a wizard, or a rogue are the three fantasy archetypes you may choose from in this visually stunning side-scrolling adventure game. Naturally, each one has a unique set of powers, but they are all capable of providing answers to challenges.

Despite the fact that the whole game is intended to be played alone, it is when two players with two distinct talents get together and disrupt the game that Trine 2 truly comes to life.

The game’s many inaccessible regions might be frustrating when played alone, but when played cooperatively, one player can perform a levitation spell as a wizard and carry a second player to the location where they need to be.

Take that, rules of the game! Although the puzzles in Trine 2 are never nearly as challenging as those in Portal, having additional assistance from buddies is always beneficial, particularly when things become intricate and time becomes critical.

As with Valve’s masterwork, discussing and solving the issue with pals feels much more like a co-op win than shooting down a beast in a shooter ever would. Enjoy simple case puzzles in the social space of Trine 2. The good thing is that the community is friendly and non-toxic.

Honorable mentions include Rainbow Six Siege and Streets of Rogue
