On the Rocks (2020)

A man and a women sitting at a table

On the Rocks is a comedy-drama film directed by Sofia Coppola, who is most known for her work on music videos and television shows. In contrast, the highly lauded films that Coppola has directed, such as Lost in Translation and A Very Murray Christmas, both of which feature Bill Murray as the main character, have received mixed reviews from critics.

This film is just another contribution to the magnificent partnership of the two great artists, who have previously collaborated on other projects. This film tells the tale of Laura (Rashida Jones), a befuddled wife and mother who believes her husband (played by Anthony Anderson) is cheating on her.

She seeks counsel from her brash, playboy-like father, who is portrayed by Bill Murray, in order to succeed. Instead of being concerned about the situation, he continues to make fun of her and leads her on an adventure trail that follows her husband from New York to Mexico, where he eventually ends up in jail.

The film tackles father-daughter relationships, husband-wife relationships, as well as emotional aspects such as concealed anguish and giving up on other people, among other things. Overall, the ensemble has done a fantastic job of crafting a funny drama that is nonetheless devastating at its core, as seen by the ratings. Stars are Rashida Jones, Bill Murray, Marlon Wayans.

The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021)

Man sitting on bed

The Tragedy of Macbeth is a stage rendition of William Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth, which was first performed in 1603. The dialogue throughout the film is written in the Shakespearean English style of Shakespeare. Consequently, if you are unfamiliar with his writing style, it would be beneficial to read some of his masterpieces before viewing the movie.

The film is a masterpiece, including outstanding performances, amazing directing, and stunning photography. Not to mention, the background soundtrack is unnerving and will elicit strong emotional responses from you while viewing the video. The filmmaker has employed just the bare minimum of set ornamentation in order to give the film a theoretical appeal.

His Lady Macbeth will do anything so her husband reaches the throne. The Tragedy of Macbeth is one of the finest movies of 2021, and it is cinematic classic thanks to the use of black and white photography and a 4:3 aspect ratio, as well as the superb storyline. It starts with stars like Denzel Washington, Frances McDormand, Alex Hassell. Directed by Joel Coen.

Also, a recommendation is the film Child Of Deaf Adults and School Choir if you find likes in this one.

The Banker (2020)

Two man with ties and hats looking at something

Inspire by the true tale of two black men who join the world of real estate in order to create better amenities for their neighborhood, The Banker is a comedy-drama. Anthony Mackie, Samuel L. Jackson, and Nicholas Hoult are among the many talented performers that appear in the film.

A fundamental question, “How can you win in a rigged game?” serves as the central focus of the film. And the solution may be found in a light-hearted comedy called The Banker. Sadly, the video depicts the immorality of life in the 1950s, which is still a part of our contemporary civilization.

It is encouraging to see a young financial genius work his way through the ranks to compete with the best in the business, regardless of the obstacles he faces. In the meanwhile, you’ll receive a crash education in how to think like a businessperson while also enjoying a fantastic tale.

Beastie Boys Story (2020)

The Beastie Boys Story. The boys state that if you grew up at a time when people listened to music on cassette tapes, chances are you’ve heard of the Beastie Boys and their songs.

They were one of the earliest successful hip-hop acts, earning a spot on the Billboard 200 chart in their first year of existence. Beastie Boys Narrative is a documentary directed by Spike Jonze, who also filmed the band’s music video for “Sabotage.”

It shows us some vintage footage from the band’s active years as the two members, Mike-D and Ad-Rock, explain to us the story behind it all. It is a musical pleasure for any and all Beastie Boys fans, and it opens the door for new listeners to get a taste of the original hip hop.

Swan Song (2021)

Potrait of a man unfinished

Every now and then, a film comes out that serves as a timely reminder of what filmmaking is all about in the first place. Swan Song takes a popular sci-fi film theme and blends it with aspects of loss, drama, and human emotion to create a powerful and moving picture.

The plot is on a guy who is going to die, but who is able to prolong his life via the use of a clone in order to prevent his family from being disturbed. However, when the deadline approaches, he realizes that he is not prepared to make the trade.

All of his emotions take control of him, providing us with crucial insights into what it could be like to die. Greyhound (2020)

A ship capitan and a sea full of burning ships

Greyhound is a film version of C. S. Forester’s book The Good Shepherd, which was published in 1955. Ernest Krause, a Navy Commander portrayed by Tom Hanks, was the story’s central character. He has been charged with delivering an ally defense unit back to safety across the Atlantic Ocean from their current location. However, they get stranded in hostile territory and are now under assault from all directions. Commander Ernest decides to rescue the unit on his own initiative.

The film has outstanding battle sequences, an enthralling musical composition, and breath-taking performances. We can only imagine how much work the production crew has put into it, and I’m sure they’re excited about the prospect of releasing it in theaters. It’s just so fantastic that I would have suggested seeing the film in a theater instead of at home. If you are a fan of such movies, check out The Sky Is Everywhere (2022) with stars like Bernard Garrett.

The Elephant Queen (2019)

Two elephants

An age story. Animal documentaries on Discovery, Animal Planet, and National Geographic were some of my favorite shows to watch while I was growing up! Since Apple began streaming nature documentaries, I’ve grown to like the over-the-top (OTT) platform even more.

There is a troop of female adult elephants and their progeny in the narrative of The Elephant Queen, which is headed by the large elephant Ethena. When their former house is destroyed by nature and they are forced to relocate 200 miles away, they go on a quest to find a new home for themselves.

The program also shows how elephants express their feelings, their position in the culture of the wild, and how every species benefits from the efforts of the other animals. Chiwetel Ejiofor provides the narration for this educational and uplifting video about elephants and how they live together as a family, supporting one another and providing for their young.

Finch (2021)

A guy with a robot and a dog

Prepare to be reintroduced to the legendary actor Tom Hanks in and as Finch. No matter how many times we see him on television, he always manages to elicit fresh feelings from us, even in parts and plotlines that are quite similar to his previous ones.

Finch is a survival tale about a lone survivor in a devastated world. Those who think it reminds them of Castaway and Terminal are totally correct. A post-apocalyptic environment is depicted in the narrative, in which Finch, a former robotics engineer, attempts to live with just a dog and no human companions, food, or adequate housing.

He develops a humanoid robot with one goal in mind: to defend the dog at all costs, no matter what. This science-fiction film is about the importance of trust, camaraderie, fraternity, and love. So, if you are good with shedding a few tears while watching this great drama, go ahead and watch it with everything emotional.

Come From Away (2021)

Come from away written in yellow letters

This American-Canadian musical film is based on the same-named Broadway musical. It was filmed entirely on location in Toronto. The plot revolves around 7000 people who were stuck in the little town of Gander in the Canadian province of Newfoundland.

Following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, 38 airplanes that were scheduled to arrive in the United States were diverted elsewhere. The villagers greeted the travelers with open arms and offered them any assistance they needed.

The original musical was written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, and it included appealing music and detailed lyrics. Following the closure of the Broadway theatre due to the Covid outbreak, director Christopher Ashley made this film adaptation in Los Angeles.

The tale of humanity, faith, and hope is told via the medium of a musical. It is heartwarming to see how the locals put their hearts and souls into assisting the befuddled travelers on their journey.

CODA (2021)

A family huging each other

CODA is certainly one of the most innovative and unique film concepts that anybody could ever come up with. It’s a tale of a girl who has the ability to sing like an angel despite the fact that she was born into a family of deaf people.

The unique approach to the beauty of art is intriguing, and it is shown well in this movie. It marks the beginning of the protagonist’s voyage into the world, which necessitates her separation from her family. The soundtrack of the film also has some excellent tunes, and you will undoubtedly fall in love with them. After all, it is a film about music, so there’s that.

Watch this wonderful narrative for its message of optimism, positivism, and family support, as well as, of course, for the incredible story. Stars are Emilia Jones, Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur.

Palmer (2021)

A man with beard and a cap

Palmer is the tale of a man who, after serving 12 years in jail, is attempting to figure out who he is and what he wants to do with his life. Eddie Palmer, a teenage football player who also happens to be a criminal, commits a crime and then returns to his grandma after 12 years. He quickly gets work as a janitor at a nearby elementary school.

While Eddie is contemplating his life, he also happens to be caring for Sam, a little child whose mother is a heroin addict who regularly puts Sam under the supervision of Vivian, Eddie’s grandmother. After Vivian’s death, Eddie develops a strong relationship with Sam and comes to terms with his effeminate nature.

As the case moves forward to the courtroom, a disagreement arises between the adults about who should look for Sam. Initially, the film is uninteresting, but as it progresses, the viewer’s interest grows. I like how the filmmaker chose not to show any previous material and instead let the audience construct the characters’ tales.

Meanwhile, it firmly shines a light on the subject of gender identity without making a huge deal out of the situation. The themes of self-discovery, optimism, humility, and love are explored in this film. A few minutes into Palmer’s wonderful narrative, you’ll find yourself crying and laughing simultaneously.

As a result, brace yourself for an emotional rollercoaster trip. Stars in the film are Justin Timberlake, Ryder Allen, June Squibb.

Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry (2021)

A blury picture of a girl with green hair

The world’s a little blurry. Billie Eilish is one of the most well-known music singers from Generation Z, and this documentary does an excellent job of bringing her story to the attention of the general public.

We are living in an era in which kid depression is a legitimate concern. In addition to influencing countless youngsters with her heartbreaking songs and relatable lyrics, Billie has brought love and optimism all across the globe with her music.

This documentary provides answers to several intriguing issues, such as how she handles her life while on the road, how her parents feel about her profession, and what it takes to produce albums that shatter records. While watching Billie Eilish: The World Is a Little Blurry, you can’t help but think about how innovative Apple’s approach to original programming has been.

Boys State (2020)

A guy on top of the capitol building

Boys State is a political documentary that follows the experience of 1000 youths who participated in the American Legion Boys State program in the state of Texas.

It chronicles the whole process of how this fictitious government is put together, from the beginning to the end. Although it provides a fascinating view into how future government could appear for us in the future, it isn’t as utopian as one would expect.

A soiled profession, politics is characterized by deceptive marketing, muddled decision-making, and some unsavory underlying facts, all of which are examined in this documentary.

All of this may seem to be uncomfortable at first. What it does imply, however, is that we are aware of the actuality of our ruling model.

Boys State was awarded the Grand Jury Prize for Documentaries at Sundance 2020 for its originality and brutally clear look into the camp, which is enough to indicate that it is a worthwhile infotainment film to watch on Apple TV+, which is available now.

Wolfwalkers (2020)

Animated character of a girl with wolves

Wolfwalkers is a stunning animated picture set in 17th-century Ireland. It is available on Netflix. It is the story of a little girl who wishes to assist her father in his quest to capture all of the wolves in the forest around the Irish hamlet of Kilkenny.

The girl, on the other hand, realizes that the wolves are not the vile beasts that everyone believes them to be. Aside from bringing her closer to another wild girl, the enchantment of the jungle also leads her closer to a wolf walker, a person who turns into a wolf while sleeping.

Overall, the film features a compelling tale, beautiful animation, and a fascinating look at Irish mythology. It’s a fantastic piece of jewelry for folks of all ages. Stars are Honor Kneafsey, Eva Whittaker, Sean Bean.

The Velvet Underground (2021)

A girl sitting at a table drinking coffe

When Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison, John Cale, Moe Tucker, and Nico started the Velvet Underground in the 1960s, they were a well-known rock band in their own right.

The documentary uses songs to tell the story of their journey and effect on the globe. It is mostly composed of archival film in which a few cool folks photograph a cool band wearing sunglasses and engaging in indoor activities while wearing sunglasses.

Everything you would expect from a documentary on a rock band from the 1960s, to be precise. The Velvet Underground’s music does not demonstrate anything particularly distinctive or intriguing about the band.

Fans will, nevertheless, be transported back in time to remember their favorite band and how they contributed to the development of American music history.

Hala (2019)

Hala is the tale of a Muslim adolescent living in America who must balance her personal life with her family’s expectations as well as her own choices and desires. The writing in the film is a little sloppy, and the character journey is not given the due attention it deserves.

Despite this, it manages to present a compelling narrative about the problems of a little girl who is torn between what is appropriate for her and what is not. Many people think that this film portrays a stereotyped picture of Muslim households and so consider it to be religiously insensitive.

The film, on the other hand, discusses the differences and difficulties that might arise while growing up in a different community. Generally speaking, Hala follows the expected narrative of a film about a girl who questions the authority of her parents and the influence of religion in her life.

Everything in Hala, from the music score to the acting to the director to the script, is subpar, resulting in a light and airy film. Stars are Geraldine Viswanathan, Jack Kilmer, Gabriel Luna.
