Netflix comes to us in times of hardship — maybe not with words of wisdom, but we’ll take a comforting salve of nostalgia any day. The streaming behemoth takes pleasure in its extensive library of feel-good films, which include films from bygone periods, stars from all over the globe, and storylines that remind us that all is not lost.
If you have some spare time, you could be tempted to watch a list of Best Picture winners or reviewers’ favorite dramas. However, we understand if Saving Private Ryan is too emotional for you. There are lots of pleasant and enjoyable movies to choose from, and they aren’t all cheesy B-list fare.
We combed through Netflix’s library to identify films that would make you laugh, dance, and believe in all things wonderful. So, add a little happiness to your day by watching one of these excellent feel-good movies.
Groundhog Day
Bill Murray understands what it’s like to feel like you’re repeating the same day over and over again. Phil (Murray) is a weatherman who despises Groundhog Day but finds himself experiencing it every day in this early-’90s classic. In this lovely gem, the torment finally leads to genuine love.
One of the Netflix originals but it is generally an old version of a movie. Nonetheless, it is one of the best feel-good movies out there. Everybody plays equal parts with each other and the supporting cast is awesome.
Definitely check it out. Some of the honorable mention actors include Noah Centineo, Meryl Streep, and Millie Bobby Brown, who delivered iconic performances and were a part of a talented cast in the best streaming service movies out there.
Silver Linings Playbook
Pat Solitano, a former teacher, returns home to his parents after a term in a mental hospital and attempts to reconcile with his ex-wife. When Pat meets Tiffany, a fascinating girl with her own troubles, things get even more difficult.
The title “Silver Linings” is a play on the phrase “every cloud has a silver lining,” which implies “look on the bright side” or “nothing is wholly terrible.” The term is first mentioned in this context in John Milton’s 1634 book “Comus I.” A “playbook” is a set of athletic skills that may be written or remembered.
About Time
Following his role as Bill Weasley in the Harry Potter films as the world’s most innocent-looking Curse-Breaker, actor Domhall Gleeson joined Rachel McAdams in this moving, amusing story of true love and time travel.
An awesome movie to bring the singer in you out, and generally an awesome movie to watch with the whole family or your childhood friends. Another happy movie and a heartwarming story to lift up the spirits is Wine Country.
The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind
“The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind” is based on the actual tale of William Kamkwamba, a young Malawian genius who, in the early 2000s, constructed a windmill completely out of his own hands to rescue his family and community from drought and starvation.
Some see it as a little boost and uplifting film others say it is one of the best movies for a good cry. Honorable mention actors include Samantha Martin, Saoirse Ronan, and Phil Collins.
Good Burger
Teenagers working at Good Burger (including naïve Ed and Dexter, who needs to pay off a vehicle accident with his school teacher Mr. Wheat) are up against giant business Mondo Burger, which has its own fast food across the street.
The ensemble cast is awesome. You will see giant takes on how people get through times of trouble together. Honorable mention movie here is Jingle Jangle, produced by a comedy writer, which makes it one of the more fun movies. Honorable mention actors here are, Bill Nighy and Young Tiana.
A Knight’s Tale
Heath Ledger’s main performance in A Knight’s Tale, a historical fantasy largely based on the Chaucer story of the same name, included every ounce of his unmistakable charm. Will Thatcher, played by Heath Ledger, is a lowly squire whose knightly patron dies in the middle of a tournament, forcing Will to don his armor and joust in his place.
Will and his pals Wat (Alan Tudyk), Roland (Mark Addy), and finally Geoffrey Chaucer himself (Paul Bettany) work together to keep the pretense going as Will win victory after triumph, only to jeopardize everything when he falls in love with a noblewoman and begins to let his mask slip.
It’s fast, it’s hilarious, and it’s profitable. An excellent movie to watch after a long day at work, and one of the best slapstick comedies out there.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople
This awful egg journey from 2016 is a must-see. Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison) and his grumpy foster father Hec (Sam Neill) are the kind of oddball delights that writer/director Taika Waititi excels at (this time co-writing with Barry Crump, who wrote the original book).
Ricky runs into the New Zealand wilderness after losing his foster mother, only to discover that He, too, has no desire to return to society. They form the wilder people, surviving off the wilderness and avoiding arrest by authorities, including Rachel House from Thor: Ragnarok.
Wilderpeople is a moving, amusing, and bizarre movie about reuniting with family and embarking on a journey that can be enjoyed by everybody.
Girls’ Night
Nick Hurran directed the comedy-drama Girls’ Night in 1998. The film stars Julie Walters and Brenda Blethyn as two sisters-in-law, one of whom is dying of cancer, who fulfill a longstanding ambition of visiting Las Vegas, Nevada, following an unexpected bingo jackpot win.
When Dawn is diagnosed with a brain tumor, Jackie gives Dawn the $100,000 that she received from a secret boyfriend.
Dawn and Jackie, two British best friends and in-laws, work together at a factory. When Dawn is diagnosed with a brain tumor, Jackie gives Dawn the $100,000 that she received from a secret boyfriend. An honorable mention movie here is Eurovision Song Contest, which is mad fun.
The Pursuit of Happyness
In this happy-tear-jerker, Will Smith co-stars with his (adorable) pint-sized son, Jaden. Chris Gardener (Smith) might be a genius, but no one seems to notice.
When he and his son are evicted from their San Francisco residence, he is attempting to sell medical supplies. He gets an unpaid internship at a stock trading business, and he has to figure out how to care for his kid while getting his foot in the door.
Dumplin’
Dumplin’ is the epitome of delectable. While a small-town Texas girl (Danielle Macdonald) enters the local pageant to spite her beauty queen mother, she learns a few valuable lessons about self-worth in the process.
Jennifer Aniston, glittery outfits, and Dolly Parton songs are just a few of the crucial ingredients in the film that make virtually everything great. It is deserving of a crown because of its heart and kindness.
