Binge-watching TV episodes are one of the finest ways to spend time (apart from learning TikTok dances, of course). We’re probably immersed in intriguing new series like Firefly Lane or WandaVision if we’re not shamelessly watching The Office for the millionth time.
But now that we’ve had our fill of riveting American programming, we’re ready to add some foreign titles to our list, whether it’s a cookery show, a vintage comedy, or a chilling murder mystery.
So, of course, we crossed the pond to locate some of the finest British series available on Amazon Prime right now. Is it possible to make a long narrative short? The length of our line has already doubled. From Luther to Downton Abbey, these are 10 of the most binge-worthy British shows.
Doctor Who
There was the traditional Doctor Who, which was initially broadcast on BBC in 1963, before Christopher Eccleston’s successful reincarnation in 2005.
The plot revolves around a renegade Time Lord who uses a stolen time machine to go on many adventures. Return to the origins of the venerable series, as William Hartnell plays the first “Doctor.”
Good Omens
It’s no surprise that this program has a five-star rating on Amazon Prime.
Based on Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s fantasy book of the same name, this comedic series follows angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tennant) as they work together to stop the antichrist from appearing and save the world from a massive tragedy.
Grantchester
Grantchester is based on James Runcie’s The Grantchester Mysteries and follows Anglican priest Sidney Chambers (James Norton) as he teams up with Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green) to investigate a succession of murders.
Aside from Norton, Tom Brittney debuts in season four as Will Davenport, Norton’s replacement.
The Grand Tour
It’s full of British humor, adventure, and everyone’s favorite pastime: automobile racing. Join presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May as they explore the globe in beautiful vehicles.
This is a running gag and not a long story, which presents humor in the best ways. Definitely worth checking out this TV series.
Fleabag
This comedy is based on Phoebe Waller-2013 Bridge’s one-woman show “Fleabag,” about a free-spirited young woman who fights with fury and loss in modern-day London.
Waller-Bridge won six Emmy Awards for the series, as well as a British Academy Television Award for Best Female Comedy Performance. One of the best British tv shows and an excellent period drama.
Gavin And Stacey
In this BBC comedy, co-creator and star James Corden, as well as his co-stars, are just delightful. Gavin Shipman’s (Mathew Horne) relationship with Stacey Shipman (Joanna Page) is the focus of the program, and as it advances, their (very different) families are brought together.
Meanwhile, Gavin’s closest buddy Smithy is played by Corden, while Nessa Jenkins is played by Ruth Jones. You’ll fall in love with these eccentric, intriguing individuals, believe us when we say that. Most of the play happens in East London where it depicts everyday lives.
Honorable mention actors here include Steve Arnott, Jennifer Saunders who play compelling characters in new shows and captivating series.
Luther
In this compelling psychological crime thriller, expect to witness a different side of Idris Elba. Detective Chief Inspector John Luther of the Serious Crime Unit in London is played by a British actor.
Luther is recognized for his commitment, but he is also notorious for being absorbed with his cases and becoming obsessed to the point of violence. Elba was nominated for a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and four Emmys for his performance.
Friday Night Dinner
Friday Night Dinner follows the Goodmans, a middle-class secular Jewish family, as they struggle to keep their Sabbath meals on Friday evenings, as inspired by author Robert Popper’s own secular Jewish heritage.
Unfortunately, these feasts are not without their flaws. Honorable mentions here include a British history classic Vampire Slayer and honorable actors like Hugh Laurie and Stephen Tompkinson. Friday Night Dinner is for sure one of the best shows on the current streaming services, especially the second season.
The Thick Of It
The show’s creator, Armando Iannucci, characterized the program to BBC as “Yes Minister meets Larry Sanders,” with the ideal blend of comedy and truth. Political satire usually focuses on how the British government operates, covering common political concerns and the media’s involvement.
Honorable mention here is Downtown Abbey, where you get to witness an aristocratic family and their endeavor morse. Honorable mention actors are Edmund Blackadder, Helen Mirren, and Olivia Colman. They also have popular series on Hulu streaming, so check them out.
The Worst Week Of My Life
Howard Steel (Ben Miller) and Mel (Sarah Alexander) are getting ready to marry, but what happens in the week leading up to their wedding is every engaged couple’s worst nightmare.
Howard seems to attract disaster everywhere he goes, from murdering his in-laws’ dog to misplacing his wedding band.
Watch this series and you will become devoted fans in the first line and in the first season. Although some argue that this might be a tough watch, we think this is a lot of fun and the best miniseries. Some actors from it were featured on Saturday Night Live.
