eSIM technology
When the iPhone first supported two SIM cards, it was because of eSIM technology, which eliminates the need to insert a physical SIM card into the phone. Apple may now be aiming to use the eSIM feature on the iPhone 15 Pro, which is expected to come in 2023, or even sooner on the iPhone 14 pro.
Apple is expected to eliminate the actual SIM card tray from the iPhone, according to at least two industry insiders. According to a report from the Brazilian website BlogDoiPhone last week, the iPhone 15 Pro would not accept conventional SIM cards and will instead rely on eSIM technology.
The eSIM capability for both mobile number slots, according to the source, will be restricted to the Pro versions. A MacRumors report followed this rumor. According to reports, Apple has urged major US carriers to prepare for the launch of eSIM-only handsets in September 2022.
This might indicate that the iPhone 14 will be the first device to fully use eSIM technology.
When will it start?
Now, trustworthy tipster DylanDKT, who has a history of giving inside knowledge about Apple products, has stated that he “agrees with recent speculations surrounding the elimination of the actual SIM card tray.
He did not specify whether the 2022 iPhone series or the 2023 iPhone series will be the first to be SIM-card-free. He posted one of his tweets from February of this year about this sketchy rumor, which goes as follows:
“I was able to confirm with sources that Apple is attempting to get rid of the bug and the recent rumors about the elimination of the physical sim card slot. Sim Card Tray should be available sooner rather than later. It won’t happen this year, but they’re testing an unnamed iPhone model with only eSIM technology inside.”
This was one of the tweets about this rumor about Apple planning the esim service. There are also many more anonymous tipster tweets.
Other recent rumors
The report claims one British company is making a campaign called select iPhone, where they use one of the previous versions of the phone and make it compatible with eSIM technology.
Also, they want to see if they can increase their water resistance and remove unnecessary ports. A portlets iPhone with eSIM technology and strong water resistance, imagine.
For the time being, the notion of a SIM-card-free iPhone is consistent with rumors that Apple is working on an iPhone with no ports or holes.
That means future iPhones will be nothing more than a slab of metal and glass with no lightning connector or SIM card slot. But, because this is still only a rumor, take it with a grain of salt.
Apple recently demonstrated that it can reverse rumor consensus by delivering a device that is very different from what the rumors suggest. The next year will tell.
