Even though there has been considerable migration to the suburbs as a result of the epidemic, large cities continue to be desirable locations in which to live and work.

Here are Inarticly’s recommendations for the top locations to live in the United States, in case you’re thinking of moving this year or just want to take a fresh look at the area you now call home.

Raleigh, North Carolina

The city, which is one of the cornerstones of The Research Triangle, continues to draw both young workers and significant firms that want to establish themselves in the state of North Carolina. The previous year, Apple made public its intentions to build a new East Coast campus in this region, which will result in the addition of at least 3,000 new employees, as well as further incentives for individuals to relocate here.

Outside of the workplace and the research laboratory, Raleigh is swiftly ascending the cultural rankings as a destination to dine, drink, and enjoy the outdoors. Due to the city’s moderate temperature, inhabitants have sufficient opportunity to escape from their work and other responsibilities. Additionally, Raleigh has low crime rates, something that so many other cities struggle to achieve. One of the best places and generally the best cities to live in. Honorable mentions include Tampa, Grand Rapids, Sandy Springs, and Virginia Beach.

Charleston, South Carolina

Why not take advantage of the flexibility that working from home affords you to appreciate the allure that Charleston has to offer? A poll conducted by LinkedIn in 2021 found that the city is on its way to being a prominent location for remote work. However, in order to remain productive, you will likely need to exercise some self-control because this city offers a multitude of distractions that are just a short drive away from the historic downtown area.

Some of these attractions include rooftop bars, decadent Lowcountry cuisine, and nearby beaches. Even if you don’t want to work from home, Charleston offers plenty of options for you in the fields of healthcare, manufacturing (Boeing, Volvo, and Mercedes all have significant operations here), and tourism.

San Francisco, California

A knowledgeable resident of the area referred to San Francisco as “the core of the bohemian lifestyle, the nerve center of the LGBT rights struggle, and the starting point of the technological period.” The cost of living has skyrocketed in the Bay Area over the last ten years as a direct result of the influx of thousands of new technology businesses that have opened their doors there.

However, despite all of the attention that has been paid to the city’s thriving tech industry and startup environment, there are still a large number of business opportunities accessible here. The city is home to more than 30 worldwide financial offices.

The Golden City is the city that offers the most opportunities for young professionals throughout the nation. It is also the second-healthiest location to live in due to the fact that it has several hills, a big amount of recreational green space, and a high degree of walkability. When we talk about major cities which offer affordable housing and good quality of life generally, San Francisco is the place to be.

Austin, Texas

Even if affordability is becoming more of a concern, the state capital of the Lone Star State continues to entice large corporations to set up shop or grow their footprints here, and new citizens move there along with them. During the course of the epidemic, more than 150 corporations divulged their intentions to either move their operations to Austin or increase the number of jobs available in their current locations.

Whether you’re relocating here to work for Apple, Dell, Tesla, or another prominent brand in the tech industry, you’ll find that there are plenty of reasons to play, as well: Austin has a mile-long list of reasons to forget about work, beginning with early morning bike rides (Bicycling magazine ranked the city one of the top 20 most bike-friendly in the nation), and ending with late-night jam sessions on Sixth Street.

Seattle, Washington

The city of Seattle is not exactly known for its affordability, given that the typical price of a property there is estimated to reach $765,000 by the end of the year 2021. But here’s the thing: if you can work hard enough to generate enough money to support yourself here, then it could be worth it. Employees at Amazon, Microsoft, and Starbucks, who aren’t in the office, like to spend their time outside when they’re not working in The Emerald City, which is where the headquarters of all three companies are located.

The metropolitan area of Seattle provides a plethora of opportunities to take in the beautiful surroundings, from strolling through one of the city’s more than 480 parks to driving to the Cascade Mountains for a strenuous climb. There is no lack of ways to take in the sights. The local vineyard and brewery scenes may also accommodate your needs if you are searching for something that is more relaxed to taste. Honorable mentions include Omaha, Ann Arbor, and Columbia in Missouri.

San Jose, California

According to the opinion of a knowledgeable resident of the area, the expansive metropolis of San Jose is “just as much characterized by its suburban suburbs and enormous tech campuses as it is by the high-rises in its commercial core.”

Young inhabitants and recent graduates of neighboring Stanford and UC Berkeley have little problem obtaining work in the neighborhood, which claims Facebook, Google, and Apple as its top private-sector employers. Stanford and UC Berkeley are also located in close proximity to the area. They have good schools with high marks. Such schools are located in diverse area districts which are excellent for young people.

Houston, Texas

According to local estimates, Houston will add around 75,000 new jobs in 2022, and over 1.2 million new residents will move to the city over the course of the next decade, according to research conducted by the commercial real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield. The city’s immediate future appears to be bright. The Museum District of the city is home to 19 different organizations that pay homage to anything from traditional Czech culture to handicrafts.

Although Houston made its name in the fossil fuel industry with companies such as ExxonMobil, Shell, Chevron, and other major oil names, the city is making great strides toward addressing climate change. As a result of the actions it is taking to mitigate the climate crisis, Houston received an A ranking from an environmental nonprofit organization called CDP. A great city also for sports enthusiasts. Honorable mentions include Madison  Des Moines and Jacksonville.

San Diego, California

Living in San Diego is simple to appreciate since the city is blessed with magnificent beaches and sunny weather all year round. This Southern California treasure, as described by U.S. News, “offers world-class eating, professional sports, and entertainment alternatives” for all types of visitors, including college students, young professionals, and families.

San Diego has more than 30 million tourists each year, making tourism a significant contributor to the city’s economy; nevertheless, the city’s waterfront position offers more than simply a pretty view. The United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps are two of the region’s most significant employers.

Salt Lake City, Utah

The popularity of the public schools in the state’s capital city contributes to the city’s high ranking as a desirable location for families to live. In addition, Salt Lake City is known for its lively nightlife, which has an abundance of restaurants and pubs.

Additionally, this region is the base of operations for both the Utah Jazz of the NBA and a “Real Housewives” franchise. According to a survey done in Utah, the city has a low cost of living with a ton of new restaurants and a small median home price according to residents. Honorable mentions here include Massachusetts, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, and Huntsville.

Colorado Springs, Colorado

Although Denver receives a lot of praise for being a top destination to live in, Colorado Springs is quickly catching up to the state capital and giving it a run for its money, very literally. According to data provided by Redfin, the typical price of a house in Colorado Springs in January 2022 was around $425,000, while the median price of a home in Denver was $535,000.

The Springs also provides similarly quick access to the things that people love most about Colorado, which are the things that are outside of their homes. The city serves as a gateway to the natural grandeur that surrounds it, offering activities such as hiking and bicycling along the trails in Garden of the Gods Park and the infamous white-knuckle climb up Pikes Peak.

According to the data provided by the state’s Labor Department, the city of Colorado Springs has been successful in regaining all of the jobs that were lost as a result of the pandemic, despite having a higher unemployment rate than many of the other places that are included on our list.
